The major search engines will inevitably find your site by themselves.
All you need is a link from a site already in their index (website database).
However, submitting your site to search engines directly ensures that
they know about you. But most search engine marketing experts will agree
that submitting your site to the major search engines (ie. the search
engines that really count) is not necessary.
For search engine site submission, the best way to submit your site
is manually -- if for no other reason than you will know your submission
was successful.
Do not use mass submission tools that submit your site to 1000s of
search engines -- they don't work and are a waste of time. And if someone
wants to charge you for this, run!
Focus your efforts on getting listed in the major global and main country-specific
search engines and directories, since this is where the bulk of your
traffic will come from.
To submit your site manually, you need to visit each search engine
separately. Each search engine will have an "Add A Site" or "Submit
A Site" link on their home page. By clicking this link you will be taken
to a page where you can submit your site. You enter your sites url in
the submit box (some also require your email address) and click the
submit button. Simple as that!
Only resubmit your site if it is not listed on the search engines,
if you have significantly altered a pages content, or your ranking has
fallen dramatically.
If a particular page on your site is ranked well on a search engine,
do not resubmit your site to that engine. In fact, after your
initial submission you can pretty much forget about it - there is NO
need to submit your site every month, and anyone that says that you
do does not have a clue about search engine promotion!
To see if you are listed on a particular search engine, search for
your domain name on that engine. (ie if your domain is "yoursite.com",
that is what to search for.) If you are listed, your link should appear
on the results page.
Note that the lead time (the time from submission to indexing) can
be anything from a couple of days to 6 months depending on the search
engine.
