Choosing the right keywords is critical to successful search engine
marketing. You must select keywords that will bring targeted
traffic to your site. Good keywords are words which potential customers
would search for and are closely related to the content of your pages.
What would your customers search for?
Ask your customers what they would search for to find you online. Ask
your friends. Ask your colleagues. You will be surprised at some of
the replies.
Spend time brainstorming to come up with great keywords. This is not
an area that should be rushed. Your success starts (or ends) with keyword
selection.
Think like your customers!
Consider multiple variations of your keywords. Consider mis-spellings.
Once you have compiled a list of keywords, rank them in order of importance
and choose the top 20 or so. Then try to make some keyword phrases of
2-3 words each.
By combining your single keywords into keyword phrases, you increase
the relevancy and power of your keywords.
If you optimise your site using the wrong keywords, or use keywords
that are too general or extremely competitive, your efforts will be
in vain and potential customers will not find you.
